A Good Eye-Flushing For the Lovelorn

Did Valentine’s Day come and go with you still sitting single and alone on your couch (like me) wrapped in 6 blankets and engulfing a tub of Ben & Jerry’s?  Are you betting that you will NOT be the recipient of one of SAS’ illustrious promposals in the coming weeks?  Well, fret no more.  Skip the fancy attire and experience the joys and pains of romance vicariously.  We’ve got your remedy: a sappy, heartbreaking, romantic movie that will make you hate everyone in relationships and cry yourself a river.  But… Which one to watch?

The Vow:

Paige suffers from a horrible car accident and loses her memory of her husband Leo. It’s up to Leo to win her heart all over again. Can true love triumph over anything, even memory loss?

If you dare snuggle up to this one, there is no way your face will be dry. Imagine being in love, getting married and you’re happy. The unimaginable happens and your significant other doesn’t remember you. Would you fight to make them remember or let them live the life that destiny and circumstance will pave for them?

On the meter-of-tears, this one gets 2 out of 5 hearts

Pretty Woman:

Vivian Ward, a prostitute, is hired by the billionaire Edward Lewis to escort him to events and dinners during his stay in Beverly Hills. During her stay, she begins to mix business with pleasure and falls for Edward. Edward, cold and closed off, learns to let go and fall for the beautiful and charismatic Vivian.

This movie is really out of the box when they imagined this couple. It’s difficult to imagine a prostitute and a billionaire having a happy ending, but love always finds a way.

The Last Song:

download-5Ronnie and her brother are sent to live with their father who they haven’t seen in years. Ronnie is stubborn, opinionated, and an amazing musician.  She meets Will… compassionate, broken, and strong. Will these two’s personalities mesh or collide?

Our childhood screams at the sight of Miley Cyrus before she got weird. Don’t get me started on Nicholas Sparks; we all know he’s a demon that likes to rip out our hearts. This is a classic—filled with music, laughter, and unforeseen twists that will have you crying a river. What secrets will be uncovered in Ronnie and Will’s summer romance?

The Fault In Our Stars:

download-6Based on the amazing novel by John Green, Hazel Grace Lancaster is a 16-year-old cancer patient who happens to come across the dreamy Augustus Waters.  Augustus understands Hazel and they have the same humor.  It’s a beautiful teen love story, or is it?

Almost everyone has read this book and gushed, likely ruining the physical pages of their book in the process. But to see it in action right before your eyes is a whole other experience. Prepare to feel the pain and happiness that these characters go through.

The Longest Ride:

A former bull riding champion, Luke, and college student, Sophia make an unlikely pairing. Their hectic lives threaten to tear them apart. Will they take the bull by the horns or choose to throw in the towel?

Nicholas Sparks strikes again by literally taking an arrow and shoving it through our hearts. Not only is Luke the dreamiest cowboy ever but there are two love stories in this rodeo. They meet Ira, a sweet old man who tells Sophia of his unbreakable love story with his wife. If Luke and Sophia don’t make you cry Ira’s story definitely will.

Safe Haven:

Katie Feldman leaves her dark past behind and tries to start a new life on the beautiful North Carolina coast. Wary at first, she learns to trust and love again when she meets widower Alex. Just as she is starting to get comfortable with her new life her dark past returns to reclaim her. Will she be overpowered or fight ba

This is Nicholas Sparks…again. (I swear I do not make my choices based on his inclusion.)  This romance movie has a little action for those who hate soppy films. The amount of love, twist and turns this film presents will have you rocking on the floor with your thumb in your mouth.

Meet Joe Black:download-9

Bill Parish, a wealthy business and family man, celebrates his 65th birthday but is suddenly visited by Death. Begging for his life, Death decides to make a deal with Bill so that he will enjoy a few days more and Death will be able to see what it’s like to be human. Unplanned, Death learns what love truly means to a human by consequently falling in love with Bill’s daughter.

Brad Pitt. That’s all I have to say. Who doesn’t want to see a movie with Brad Pitt? The climactic scenes in this movie leading up to the final scene are amazing. The best part is that there is so much that we know that the characters do not. That’s what makes this one a tear jerker to the very last second.

The Notebook:

In 1940s South Carolina, poor mill worker Noah Calhoun falls for rich girl Allie. Allie’s family disapproves of Noah and he leaves to serve in World War II. Soon after Allie gets engaged, Noah returns to his small town. It’s clear that their romance is anywhere but over.

My heart just broke in this one. Everyone craves a love like theirs. It’s not just the story of Noah and Allie, but the fact that this is all a flashback and they are old. Noah is trying to get Allie to remember him because she suffers from Alzheimer’s. Just rip my heart out, once again, won’t you?  Noah and Allie are what true love is, but this story reveals its most painful elements.

Me Before You:

download-11Louisa Clark moves from job to job in order to help support her family. Her upbeat positive attitude landed her the job of being the caregiver to William Traynor, a wealthy young man who suffered from an accident 2 years prior.  His cynical outlook on life changes the more he spends time with Louisa.

Everything about this relationship is normal and cute, but the fact that Will is in a wheelchair and so despaired with his life makes it sad. All Will wants is to make Louisa undeniably happy. The problem is he doesn’t think he can do it. Will he stay by Louisa’s side or let her go?

download-12Juli Baker and Bryce Loski meet in 2nd grade when Juli’s family moves down the street from him. Juli instantly falls for him…Bryce, on the other hand, couldn’t wait to get away from her. For six-years Bryce does everything in his power to keep Juli as far away from him as possible. After six years Juli begins to think Bryce isn’t as great as she thought, but Bryce begins to think Juli isn’t as horrible as she first seemed. Can the spark that happened in 2nd grade be salvaged or will it burn out?

This is by far the cutest romance movie ever.   It begins in the 60s and then invites us to grow up with them and see both sides of the story.   And, yes, this is also a movie that will lead you to tears.
