Deliveroo: delivery by kangaroo

It’s a typical Thursday night and you are having a strong craving for those world-renowned Truffle Fries that only PS Cafe manages to perfect. Unfortunately, you’re don’t have cash on you and you have an English paper due the next day, so going there and waiting on the food is absolutely out of the question. You sink back into your chair filled with self-pity, when suddenly a brilliant idea hits you in the form of a teal colored app known as Deliveroo.

Deliveroo has quickly risen in the ranks as the most popular delivery service in Singapore. Originally founded by two Americans, Greg Orlowski and William Shu, in London after realizing London has no reliable delivery service, it has since expanded its offices to 30 UK cities as well as 11 countries, including Hong Kong, UAE and Spain. Not only is it incredibly efficient in its services, but it also offers an enormous range of variety to its meals.

Overall, Deliveroo represents 1,200 restaurants in Singapore, including the famous Kinki, a Japanese restaurant located on the Fullerton front known for its one-of-a-kind sashimi. The restaurants represented by Deliveroo range from burger joints to Indian restaurants to boba tea. Yep, that’s right, you can now order boba tea and have it delivered quicker than actually getting dressed, going out and buying it.

Restaurants can only be chosen to go on the list if they match Deliveroo’s key criteria. “We select the restaurants we work with because we want to keep them premium and loved,” Tristan Torres, general manager of Singapore’s branch, said. He further emphasized Deliveroo’s key quality aspect by saying, “Some restaurants that contact us we do not add to our list because it is not a quantity game for us, but rather about quality.”

One of the key aspects of Deliveroo that boosts it above all other delivery services in Singapore is the speed of delivery. On average, it takes 32 minutes from the moment you place your order for the food to be at your front door. You can track the process of the delivery on the app as well, even down to the exact location of your delivery person, or “Rooman.” The way that Deliveroo ensures quick, efficient delivery with food that arrives warm, never soggy and always high quality is by allowing you to order only from restaurants within your neighborhood.

Restaurants offered to you are often no farther than two kilometers from your location. With such close proximity, Deliveroo is able to ensure the quality of its food as well as incredibly fast delivery. Delivery men and women are known as “Roomen” and “Roowomen,” referring to the kangaroo used in the Deliveroo logo. Despite having over 1000 riders currently working to deliver quality food to all locations in Singapore, Deliveroo manages to have an impeccably organized system functioning behind the scenes by over 70 staff members. Mr. Torres believes good quality service starts with happy employees, “I have in my bedroom a sign that says ‘Happy employees will give you happy customers which will make revenue.’ For me, it’s all about engaging and motivating my team.”

One major benefit of using Deliveroo rather than other delivery websites is that the delivery price is minimal at a flat rate of only $3 per order. You have the option of giving “roomen” tips as well, but this can also be done through a simple click on your phone. They do not take cash on delivery, payment is instead made over the credit card you assign to your account.

The purpose for this no-cash policy is simple: “This is the new millennium, we don’t party like it’s 1999.” The no-cash policy also adds a level of ease and safety to each transaction. You don’t need to have any cash on hand when ordering from Deliveroo, just a credit card that automatically bills you for your orders.

Deliveroo is perfect for a variety of occasions, whether it’s for a sleepover where no one can agree on one restaurant to order from, a late night study session in need of fueling or you’re feeling a stay-at-home kind of Friday night. Check out the main Deliveroo website to get started.

Many students have already become fans. As sophomore Louisa Blakeley said, “Deliveroo is the best delivery service in Singapore. They have never let me down and I’d recommend it to anyone who is looking for something easy and reliable.”
